Vincent Matthews : Artist
I have a real passion for drawing, painting, etching and engraving. I like to use various mediums such as pencil, charcoal, ink pen, watercolour, gouache and oil paint.
My subject matter varies from portraiture, architectural landscape, to manipulating images through a process of abstraction. I have a natural interest in detail and my work is largely skills-based. I love to sketch in pencil from life.
My background is art and design. I was drawing before I could talk and did my first oil painting commission at 16 years of age, followed shortly afterwards with 3 more. I rediscovered my passion for art after 24 years in my design profession. On finishing a 2-year Fine Art course at CityLit in London, in 2007, I completed some etching courses at Camberwell College of Art. I began my career studying at Maidstone College of Art and Croydon School of Art and Design in the late 1970s.
My art was in 5 art exhbitions last year. This year I took part in South East Open Studios in my own Northiam studio, also participating in The Blackshed Gallery's taster show, in the Battle Summer Contemporary Fine Art Fair and the Society Of Graphic Fine Art exhibition. I will have artwork in the Battle Winter Fine Art Fair (25th-29th November) and at The Muddy Duck in Northiam (26th - 27th November).
The Boat House and Smarden oil paintings have been sold.
